Well researched and deeply fasinating
Al Ridenour creates one of the best podcasts about the weird and horrific folklore. Absolute must listen if you are into bleeding saints, forest witches, or old rituals.

Funny, spooky, and highly researched! 10/10! 👍🏼
An excellent podcast that focuses on less mainstream folkloric topics. Each episode is highly researched, and paired with an excellent unique soundscape. Al Ridenour’s witty presentation style weaves humor into each episode, but the show can always take a turn and become especially chilling! e.g. The Dybbuk episode. The Patreon bonus episodes are amazing as well!

Podcasting at its best
While most of my podcast listening is political or politics adjacent, my first (and still favorite) podcast subscription was Bone & Sickle. The “intertwining of horror and folklore from a historical context” angle proves to be an incredibly enjoyable way to discover and understand works of art from centuries past to the current day. I’m bowled over by the depth of research invested in bringing to life topics I know little to nothing about, and the style and humor with which each episode’s subject is explored is why this is my most eagerly anticipated semi-monthly download.

A delightful discovery…
I loved Al Ridenour’s book “The Krampus and the Old Dark Christmas” and stumbled across this Bone & Sickle podcast – and it’s EVEN BETTER! Al’s wry exposition of folklore keeps history acceptably dark and fleshy. I appreciate all of the research that goes into these episodes, and the film and musical breadcrumbs left in the episode note links on this show’s website.

The most fun one can have in someone else’s study!
Bone & Sickle sets a standard for others to follow. A grand tour through the Wyrd, the joyously grim and the darkly comic, every lovingly crafted episode full to the brim with curios and charm.

This is a show that knits together multiple threads from the fantastic past and magical modern. Where Horror and folklore intersect in strange tales as we marvel at the seductive flowers that sprout from twisted roots.

Our host is the perfectly wonderful oddball Al Ridenour, two parts scholar, one part raconteur, with a dash of neurosis-in-denial, garnished with the driest boneyard wit. This show is hilarious, witty, learned and fascinating. With exceptional production values, Bone & Sickle is an independently produced Tour-de-Force for fans of quality audio theatre.

Excellent creepy folklore
Highly recommended, hugely enjoyable. A really polished production, with atmospheric music, referenced sources and excellent readings. The hosts’ recounting of their off stage adventures are a charming and occasionally creepy touch, but the main star here is the well researched and presented dark folklore. Cannot overstate how much I love this podcast. For anyone interested in folklore, folk horror, and/or dark fairy tales, this a must listen. It’s very apparent how knowledgeable Al is about each episode’s subject matter. After every episode I have a list of things/stories I want to look into more.
Also the short intros are always a trip as we learn more and more about the goings on around the host’s mansion.

Wickedly delightful
I LOVE this podcast! I can’t get enough of the sly humor, or the surprising connections between historical fascinations and modern horror.

Part of the delight of this show is the gleeful celebration of ideas that terrified and fascinated our ancestors. The host has this dry, academic delivery, but he builds audio backing that adds eerie ambiance and ghastly humor. Every episode feels like Halloween, or a seance, or a walk through a twilit bog.

Oh, and the framing scenes with the servants quickly became one of my favorite serial dramas.

When it’s serious, this podcast is a deep dive into history. It is wonderful to see echoes of historical weirdness in our language and culture. This has given me a sense of history I never felt from histories of cities or nations.

My commute is always brightened, and appropriately darkened, when one of these episodes is released.

Essential Listening For Folklore Fanatics
Folklore is a dense rhizome of interconnecting ideas, themes, and motifs, shifting shapes and changing faces. It’s not always easy to follow. It’s slippery, shadowy, elusive. It switches masks when you’re not looking. It hides in unexpected places.

That’s what makes folklore challenging to talk about. And also what makes it so much fun, so interesting and exciting. It’s like culture’s DNA, the building blocks of ideas.

It’s also what makes shows like Bone and Sickle so essential, so compelling, so fascinating, and just plain fun to listen to! I listen to A LOT of folklore, horror, and haunted history podcasts and i can say, unequivocably, that Bone and Sickle is a cut above. Every episode has over 100 hours of research that goes into it, and it shows. You’ll get the etymological origins of words and language. You’ll get stories from all over the globe and throughout time. You’ll hear modern retellings of age old stories and ancient tales you’ve never heard of.

No matter how much you know, or think you know, about folklore and haunted history, Bone and Sickle are here to show you there’s so so much more to delve into!

Great Dark Folklore
Al Ridenour takes us on a succinct journey through where horror, folklore and reality cross paths and it’s really something to behold. As a fan of his book, I found his podcast to be an excellent extension of his story telling style. He demystifies the urban legend aspect of folklore while maintaining the solidly spooky aspects of what we really could never know, the otherworldliness, while handing us facts and humorous anecdotes to give you a fully rounded View of his topic. His delivery is amusing with no hint of ridicule and the topics are thus far really fascinating, I look forward to further episodes and recommend it to anyone who enjoys dark folklore.

Excellent folklore podcast
Engrossing, well-researched and evocative without any hokey flourishes. The audio samples work better than any number of overly emotional hosts playing up the pathos. Rather, the content is allowed to breathe and speak for itself.

The Perfect Mix of History, Folklore, & Horror
I first learned of the podcast after the host was a guest on The Last Podcast on the Left. I was instantly hooked with his knowledge of both the history and lore behind the Krampus, a German figure often seen as a one-dimensional Christmas demon. I find every episode so interesting and entrancing and often find myself spending hours after each episode going through the sources he cites on his webpage.

As a huge fan of The Last Podcast, I find that Bone & Sickle compliments the comedic style of The Last Podcast by lending a different perspective to similar stories with a very artistic twist. I am very excited to see Bone & Sickle blossom and develop to something much bigger (and hopefully, longer).

I highly recommend giving it a try, especially if you’re a fan of similar podcasts and looking for something completely new and different.

A must for those interested in our fascination with the Macabre
Al has a great hook – his interaciton with his valet’ Wilconsen. But the real meat is the investigation without judgement of historical stories of the supernatural. I only started listening to podcasts last year, and I’m honestly so glad Bone and Sickle was created around that same time. The very thing you didn’t know you needed
You really must subscribe to this wonderful podcast. It comports nicely with a certain set of pseudo-Victorians who don’t seem to have a real community but lurk among us. Or so I fancy. (I think there’s a kind of Steampunk aesthetic that is lurking out there in need of this sort of outlet.) But mixing pop-culture, folklore and amusing characters is a really nice touch. It’s very much like the rambling conversations I have with other like-minded folk into this stuff… but so rarely get to do in person over a drink. Alas. But this is soothing to that phantom itch, it may be your balm too! (Blake Smith – host MonsterTalk)

For fans of Lore,THIS is your new obsession..
As a connoisseur of all things dark and grisly relating to folklore or history, I was naturally thrilled to hear about a new podcast addressing such topics. For two years now I have been relying on Lore to fulfill all my morbid curiousity needs. Now here comes Bone & Sickle, ready to raise the bar on all folkhorror podcasts! You can tell Al Ridenour really immerses himself in his topic and does some amazing research; connecting topics I never knew had a connection and finding the true origins of many stories, rhymes and games we can forgranted. And he does so in the style of an old fashioned horror host (which I love!) along with fun sound bites and beautifully written origin music. It’s like Lore is is the beginning of the journey but Bone & Sickles is where you want to end up. Lore is undergrad; it’s time to get your masters.
